The weather is too beautiful not to get out and enjoy it. So I knocked off work early, grabbed my pack, and headed out the door. I had planned on hiking Pace Knoll, but no matter how early off work I was, driving, checking in at the Zion National Park visitor center, and driving to the end of the short 5-mile loop, took its toll. I was too late when I parked and checked the sun.
The Timber Creek Overlook Trail is a short 1 mile (round trip) Easy (listed as moderate on the information sign because of the 100+ climb to the overlook) class 1 maintained trail in the park. I decided not to waste the trip and began to hike down the maintained trail—what a beautiful little hike. Just out of sight from the parking lot, picnic benches sit among the juniper trees. The trail continues along the developing ridge line to the end. The views are stunning and changing as I walk along the path; views east into the Kolob Canyons fingers are breathtaking, and Smith Mesa can be seen once reaching the overlook.
I lingered in wonder and awe at this magnificent scenery spread before me. Then, looking west, I spotted Pace Knoll and a good line along the ridge line to reach the summit. As the days continue to lengthen, it won't take long until I can take off work early enough to get to the top of the knoll with time to spare.
