Unnamed peak 5860 is mountain number one of three ranked peaks in a row. I've had my eye on these peaks for some time but didn't quite know how to approach them. Visible from I-15, I would scope out the surrounding area driving by for signs of roads or fence lines.
With Christmas over and my family all heading in different directions today, I decided to explore the area and see if I could locate a possible approach road. Take exit 36 off I-15 at The Black Ridge. Turn west and then the first left into a new subdivision. Another left will put you onto a dirt road heading toward two visible communication towers.
Past the communication towers and cattle loading station, follow the road left down and through a short wash. High clearance and 4x4 are required past this juncture. If wet, the mud is very slick, be sure to carry the proper gear for off-road.
After a long drive around private property and some very rocky 4x4 climbs, the foothill road FR930 becomes a very nice dirt road. At the juncture, turn left once again. The route continues toward UNP5860 and ends at the bottom of UNP6396.
The hike is straightforward. I parked at the wash and hiked to the small ridge line running off the face. Although the walk requires working around many boulders, the summit can be reached in short order. Snow covers the surrounding hillsides, with the western face dry; the beauty of snow-covered mountains makes the short trip worthwhile.
