With high winds expected in the mountain ranges today, I decided to drive south and enjoy some warmer weather in the desert canyons of Zion National Park. I love the park during the winter months. Ordinarily accessible only by crowded shuttle buses during most of the year, I drive up the main canyon road and park next to “The Grotto” and trailhead for Angels Landing and the West Rim Trail.
A few people are moving up and down the trail, but the traffic is light compared to the summer tourist season, and I enjoy the sun and bright blue sky.
I pause to rest at the various switchback turns as I make my way higher toward refrigerator canyon. The path received substantial damage during a massive rainfall in the monsoon season, and I am surprised by the amount of damage and extensive repairs needed to allow passage.
Walter’s Wiggles are ice-covered, and I have forgotten my clip-on cleats for traction. I carefully slip and slide up the side of the trail and enjoy the stunning view from Scout Lookout.
I eat lunch and enjoy the quiet solitude of this stunning lookout. Truly one of my favorite places on earth. As I hike back along the trail, the changing sun reflects beautifully off the canyon peaks.
