With recent snowstorms moving through the area, I couldn't help but want to complete a short hike and drive through the main canyon of Zion National Park. Shuttle trams are parked for the next few weeks, and with today being a Tuesday, I expected the lines to be short and the hikes wonderful.
First, stop at the Grotto for a short, however steep hike towards Angels Landing. The trek past Scout Lookout requires a lottery ticket; apparently, the tickets for Angels Landing are necessary year-round. If I had known the details, I might have stopped at the backcountry desk and inquired if any passes were available for today.
My knee started to bother me on the hike, and I ended up cutting it short anyway, so much the better not to have wasted time and effort tracking down a pass. The views were stunning, with clouds drifting along the mountain tops and the soft Navajo Sandstone wet and dark in appearance.
I stopped briefly at Weeping rock and completed a drive through the eyelet turnaround near the Narrows. I stopped and hiked a short trail I had seen before but never visited along a beautiful stream to a series of waterfalls. The park has included decking, and the deck is laid out in such a way as to make picture-taking of the scenic background easy and safe.
Lunch at Oscar's restaurant, and I was home by 3:00 pm. Beautiful day.
