After finishing our hike to Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons, we are starving. A quick lunch of leftover pot roast, potatoes, carrots with bread and butter, and we are happy as clams. A short nap, and we are ready for more adventure along Hole-in-the-rock-road.
Next up on the list is a slightly longer drive to Devils Garden, so we opted to take the truck. There seem to be two thoughts on driving over washboard roads. First: go slow and try to find a road line that has fewer bumps than others. Second: go fast and only hit every 10th bump or so. I must admit the second one works well on straight roads, but it still rattles us around more than I could have imagined.
Devils Garden is day use only, no camping. Picnic tables dot the area, and an information sign describes the creation of Hoodoos.
We wander along the paths mesmerized by the hoodoos, arches, and windows. The Metate Arch is spectacular, but no more so than the unnamed arch around the bend. Walking among the monoliths, we wonder at their creation and the tremendous geologic forces at play.
