Wilson peak is a beautiful drive to summit along the ridgeline. The surrounding red rock of Red Canyon can be seen along the drive's entire length, just not from the summit. The mountain contains three communication sites and is covered by a large scrub bush that makes the otherwise stunning views spotty at best. The coordinates put the summit of Wilson Peak next to the FAA's VOR cone, which I was reluctant to get to close, too. The entire area has been leveled off for the cone anyway. I found the best views to be back down the road to a grove of Bristlecone pine trees and a small fire pit. Eating lunch on a stump, surrounded by ancient trees and the view into Red Canyon, is simply stunning.
I drove to the summit using an ATV, which allowed me to access a portion of the 33002 Fremont ATV Trail. Heading East on UT-12 just past Red Canyon at 37.7196, -112.2554, turns right into the staging area, including restrooms facilities. Parking is limited, but the lot is for assessing the Red Canyon Bike Path. If using a larger vehicle to drive to the summit, access the main road further east on UT-12 at 37.7178, -112.2409. Both will lead to Wilson Peak, the Fremont ATV trail zips and zags through some trees to arrive at the same point.
Follow the road leading up the ridgeline. Designated 30111 Wilson Peak FAA, and a small brown sign 111 is near the junction. The trail is well-traveled and contains several beautiful camping spots along the way. Once on the peak, the road spiders to the various sites and are easy to navigate near the summit. A short walk will take you as near the summit as allowable.
