Chimney Rock and the Colossus of Cannonville, Henrieville - UT, quad

After enjoying the cool of the trailer's air conditioning this afternoon, Linda and I decided to take a short ATV ride to visit Chimney Rock. I have since learned the immense structure to the east is called the "Colossus of Cannonville," well, that's the nickname anyway, I guess.

The setting sun and clouds made for stunning photography of the "Sand Pipe," plus I have always been fascinated with the nature and history of how sand pipes are created. I'm less impressed with National Geographic's story about the area, that team's failure to inquire about the names of the places they were visiting, creating and changing names for their account, instead of upholding tradition and current titles. Kodachrome is a fitting name, but Grosvenor Arch was already named, before the journalists felt a need to change it, and named it after National Geographic's Founder (Kelsey).

For the first time, I have taken the short drive from Chimney Rock to the base of the Colossus of Cannonville, merely opting in the past to enjoy this stunning structure from a distance. What a mistake that has been, close up, this fantastic formation is beyond description.
